DEATH IN THE DESERT

Miniatures, Painting and Basing

- by Commander Toby R.
Legionnaires defend a water hole.

There are a number of books on the Foreign Legion and their uniforms - we used Uniforms of the French Foreign Legion by Martin Windrow which is actually out of print but the same author wrote the Men at ArmsFrench Foreign Legion guide. The Arab tribes proved harder to find information on. In the end we used scenes from the BBC Beau Geste, reproduced old paintings of Bedouin and Taureg Tribes fighting the Legion, and our imagination. In general we used natural earthy colours with the occasional red or green which we had spotted in some of the paintings.

Airfix Fort Sahara

To fight in our desert we needed some troops. We had already decided on the era (circa 1890) and the setting (Sahara desert) so all that was missing was some French Foreign Legion and a few Arab tribes.

After some looking around and a few phone calls we decided on Irregular miniatures. Although their range of Legion troops did not claim to be extensive a quick call to them to explain what was needed left us reassured that they could put two suitable armies together by utilising their vast range of colonial miniatures from that era. Two days later a box arrived that left us more than happy.

The rules we were using – Death in the Desert, assumes individually based figures. This is not only flexible but, where scenery such as the fort and other buildings (see below) are being used, multi figure bases can prove restrictive. So without further a do we got basing.

Next we undercoated with a matt black spray before beginning to paint.

The base was flocked by mixing some PVA glue with paint and then dipping the painted base in sand while still wet.

The fort was an old Airfix Fort Sahara that we sprayed with 2 different shades of desert yellow and then dry brushed white.

Kerr and King Desert buildings For buildings we ordered Kerr & King's desert city in a box which is excellent value and has a number of options available with it. Again we under coated black, added a rough coat of brown and then dry brushed a sandy colour on top. We finished off with a dusting of white.
