DEATH IN THE DESERT

Death in the Sand?

colonial conquest We have a copy of Colonial Coquest, issue 5 (1993) by Partizan press that features a set of rules entitled "Death in the Sand" by Eastbourne Wargames club together with some excellent photos. We can only assume this is the original set of the rules as they are strikingly similar. One of the few differences is the Legion Commander's saving throw table which we like so much we use with the current rules. The effect is to make the whole thing much more filmic or Beau Geste like in its approach to combat and we have had many incidents of officers performing daring acts of bravery despite the loss of their whole unit around them. We think this is in keeping with the spirit of the rules though we can see why some might not like it.

Last time we checked Partizan still had some issues available via Caliver Books.

is a set of fast play 15mm Foreign Legion Rules by Eric Burgess. Whilst no time frame for their setting is given it seems apparent that this would be the period between the 1890's right up to 1920's as German firing stats are included.

Incoming! The rules state that they are designed to have the Legion defending a fortification, (Beau Geste like) though this is not compulsory. Obviously the normal procedure is to have large numbers of Arabs attacking a beliguered Legion garrison and what we particularly like is the system whereby the Legion commanders have no idea just how many waves of Arabs they will have to survive against.

We gave the rules their first outing at as our Christmas game which you can read about here... Being one of our main events we like to put in that bit of extra effort which included buying & painting the miniatures and making the scenery especially for the occasion and you can find out about that here...
